Best Hot Cocoa Recipe

With the days and nights getting colder at the Village at Rice Hope Apartments, we wanted to share a FANTASTIC recipe for hot cocoa. So have fun making it and enjoy!

Ingredients
8 teaspoons sugar
4 teaspoons baking cocoa
4 cups milk
1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
In a saucepan, combine the first four ingredients. Cook and stir over medium heat until the marshmallows are melted, about 8 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla. Ladle into mugs.

Are you looking for some ways to save some extra money this holiday season? Well I have great news for you. While trying to figure out what I wanted to make for dinner one night, one of my residents at the Village at Rice Hope told me about Kraftfoods.com. The people at Kraft Foods have created a website called 1 Bag, 5 Dinners. Not only do they have an assortment of choices from Healthy Living to Pork, Seafood, Chicken, and Beef, but they put it all into an easy menu printable format just for you. They have created a menu with a picture of the dish and the recipe that you can print out and use during the week. And the best part is they have compiled all of the ingredients you need into one easy shopping list so you know exactly what to buy. And with all the cabinet space in our kitchens at the Village at Rice Hope Apartments you will be able to easily store everything you need to make your dinners absolutely fabulous.

New Recipe

First off, I am sorry I did not get to post yesterday…but after eating that delicious turkey dinner yesterday I couldn’t help but doze off. I wonder if my neighbors at the Village at Rice Hope Apartments felt the same way. Well if they are anything like my family I know they are probably trying to decide what to do with all those Thanksgiving leftovers.

I found a great recipe that might help all of you. This tasty turkey casserole recipe is made with leftover turkey, leftover stuffing and gravy, and a little cranberry sauce for topping. And the great thing is…with all the counter space the Village at Rice Hope apartments offers us, we can pull out all of our ingredients at once J

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:
· 4 cups prepared turkey stuffing
· 2 cups cooked cut up or sliced turkey
· 1 3/4 to 2 cups prepared turkey gravy
· 1/3 cup jellied or whole cranberry sauce, cubed

Preparation:
Butter bottom and sides of 2-quart baking dish. Arrange half of the stuffing in bottom of dish. Add half of the turkey then half of the gravy. Repeat layers. Top with cubes of cranberry sauce. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.Serves 4.

Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, all of us at the Village at Rice Hope Apartments are either eager to get home to eat with family or anxious to go shopping for the big day of cooking. On this stressful day, we thought we would spread some fun facts about Thanksgiving.

Did you know…

· In the US, about 280 million turkeys are sold for the Thanksgiving celebrations.
· Each year, the average American eats somewhere between 16 - 18 pounds of turkey.
· Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.
· Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States.

Second Harvest Food Bank

Today we delivered 58 pounds of food and they were extremely happy. This will help so many people in need this Holiday season. Holiday Photo Shoot

We are so excited to be able to offer our residents a Holiday Photo Shoot less than a mile away from where they live. Here are the details...

When: Wednesday, November 4th and Thursday,November 5th from 5pm – 9pm

Where: The VRH Clubhouse

On both of these days, VRH has scheduled a photographer named Becky Smith to come and take your holiday pictures. You can view her site at www.photosbybecky.net.

Families, friends, and pets are all welcome with no sitting fee. All photos will be delivered to the clubhouse on Nov. 20th!

The 7th Annual Mutt Strut

On November 7th, 2009, Isa, our Relocation Agent, will be walking along side Princess (her very own rescued dog) and many other dog lovers in the 7th Annual Mutt Strut in Forsyth Park. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this event, Mutt Strut is a fun-filled, dog walking event and fundraiser benefiting the Humane Society.

Look out for them...they will be wearing green to represent SC Bodner Inc. and the Village at Rice Hope Apartment Community.

Bugs

Are you noticing that as the weather gets warmer, the bugs get more daring? I sure am. Here at the Village at Rice Hope we have been getting some beautiful, but very warm weather. Warm weather definitely gives bugs the urge to wander inside of your beautiful apartment home. Not only does the weather give them a push, but with all of our new landscaping happening there might be a few extras.

If you are noticing small gnat-like bugs in your apartment home, they are fruit flies. They feed off the excess waste left on your garbage disposal and other drains. Even if you kill one it seems like more come. This is because they lay their eggs in the extra water left behind in your drain. Dennis from Ehrlich Pest Control gave me some great directions to get rid of the pests.

1. First put a handful of ice into your garbage disposal and turn it on. This breaks up the excess food and waste left on the disposal blades.
2. Pour 1 cup of bleach into each of your drains to kill the eggs and waste.
3. Do step 3 twice a day for five days and soon you will be like me...PEST FREE!

Also don't forget the Village at Rice Hope offers Ehrlich Pest Control services every Thursday, so make sure you let the office know if you need us to put your apartment on the list.

It's Time for a Change

Since the weather here in Port Wentworth, Georgia has been an off and on again rainy mess for the past week, I decided it was time for a change. As I sat in front of my huge sliding glass door and watched the Village at Rice Hope community change everyday, I realized that for the past couple of months my living room furniture has remained the same...dull and oddly placed. I always knew that our living room was much bigger than we set it up to be, but I never felt the want to change it.

This past Wednesday, I really felt the need to do something about it. So after sitting in front of the TV for about an hour, I decided to change things around. It was hard work, but it was fun.

Some tips I kept in mind when trying to create a fresh new look were...
1. Remember space is always important.
2. Get rid of unnecessary furniture.
3. Get organized. Cube storage set-ups are Awesome!
4. Objects such as writing utensils, buttons, etc. can easily fit into a freshly washed jar.

It's Spring Time

With the increasing amount warmer days approaching, the weather will have us pushing up our windows and taking in deep breaths of fresh air this spring. Yes, it’s spring, and it’s time to remove that winter dust and give your apartment and yourself a shiny new makeover.

Welcome Back Outside
1. Try planting some bright colored flowers to get you in the spring time mood.

2. There is nothing like opening your window to enjoy the spring time breeze. Try using ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 quart warm water with a damp cloth to remove the dirt and grime from around your screen.

A Fresh Start Indoors
1. In the fridge, throw away any food items with expired dates, strange smells or interesting colors. Use the baking soda mixture and a sponge to clean the inside of your fridge. When your finished place an Arm & Hammer Baking Soda box inside your fridge to help things stay fresh. Don’t forget to change it every 30 days.

2. With the growing season starting, it's time to get cooking! Clean your food prep area with natural, food-safe baking soda instead of harsh cleaners. Sprinkle baking soda onto a clean damp sponge or cloth and wipe clean, rinse thoroughly, and then dry.

How to Get Rid of the Electric Bill Blues

Does living in an apartment make you worry about the electric bill blues? Well here at the Village at Rice Hope, we are here to help. Our community has become one of the few who are trying to become more GREEN and efficient. Some quick tips that can help you lower your electric bill are:

Keep your air filter clean - A dirty air filter makes your heater (and in summer, your A/C) work much harder. A new one can save you up to $5.00 a month. And don’t forget you can stop by the office anytime to pick up your new filter.

Dump those old light bulbs - The new compact fluorescent light bulbs are electric bill magic. They use less electricity than traditional bulbs and last ten times longer. Here at the Village at Rice Hope we have stocked your apartment with fresh, new light bulbs to start you off right.

Wash clothes in cold water - About 90% of the energy used in a clothes washer goes to water heating. And don’t forget we have a full-sized washer and dryer in every apartment.
